SharePoint 2010: Turning off customErrors does not seem to work.

We all know how to turn off custom error messages in ASP.NET, so that actual error messages appear on the screen than usual ASP.NET style generic messages. For more information on how to turn off, ASP.NET custom error, read this

Recently, I was working on SharePoint 2010: BCS using .NET Assembly connector to access xml data source. Everything seems to function correctly except that when I click "New Item" in the external list to insert a new item,  I get to see the following error message in the modal dialog.

As usual, I went ahead and turned off custom errors but still get to see the same thing. Then realized that this is a page from _layouts folder and there is one more web.config file in 14\TEMPLATES\LAYOUTS folder. We need to turn off customErrors there also to see the actual error.

  1. Thank you for this! That was driving me nuts. Have been implementing some custom fields and did not know there was a web.config in that folder.
