SharePoint utilizes Windows authentication in the form of NTLM or Kerberos for user authentication. Besides Windows authentication, configuring SharePoint to use Forms Authentication allows validating user credentials using a custom login page against various authentication providers other than Windows authentication. SharePoint supports light weight LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) using LDAPMembershipProvider or SQL Server using SqlMembershipProvider to authenticate users who are not part of the domain.
The following is the sequence of steps to be performed to achieve this.
- Configure membership provider configuration
- Update web.config files for the application as well as Central Administration (CA) sites with new credential information sections
- Change authentication mode of the extended application in CA -> Application Management tab, to Forms and set Membership Provider name from web.config.
